Chairing Productive Meetings in The Workplace

1-Day Workshop

This workshop provides all those who chair, facilitate and participate in meetings with an understanding of formal meeting processes and procedures.  It ensures that attendees feel comfortable running a meeting and that they are able to rise to the challenges and apply the necessary solutions.

The irony of managing organisations in the technological age is that in most organisations there are more meetings, rather than less.

Meetings are becoming increasingly problematic, with attendees reporting lack of productivity, boredom, time-wasting, pettiness, frustration, conflict and irritation. An effective meeting chairman is able to reduce all these problems and ensure an effective, efficient and productive meeting that serves as a valuable tool for managing an organisation.

Unfortunately, not many chairmen receive the necessary training to enable them to fulfill their role as a committee chairman effectively. This one-day intervention aims to provide the necessary knowledge and skills to those who act as chairman of any committee.

 

Course outcomes ensure all delegates:

 

Understand the purpose of meetings

 

Are familiar with meeting terminology and formalities

 

Understand the role of the various office bearers

 

Are familiar with required and accepted meeting conduct, formal procedures and the mechanism used to control meetings

 

Are able to read certain signs indicated by the body language of attendees and energise attendees

 

Are able to deal with abuse of position, voting, motions, dissent, rescissions, no confidence, etc

 

Understand how speakers should be accommodated at formal meetings and understand formal debating procedure

 Delegates are taught competence in the following areas:

  • terminology is recognised and understood
  • terminology can be used
  • responses are appropriate
  • formality is retained
  • a professional image is conveyed
  • office bearers are knowledgeable
  • attendees comply with meeting process

This ensures that problematic meetings can be controlled and smooth progress ensured, including meetings that:

  • become top-heavy with business
  • drag on beyond the allotted time
  • achieve little, or nothing
  • are not progressing
  • threaten to become uncontrolled / uncontrollable

Meetings will be far less stressful, antagonistic and boring.  Competent attendees and office bearers will ensure that meetings are more productive and a great deal more fun because attendees are more willing, cooperative, enlivened, participative and committed and will welcome challenges.
